What to Watch Recommendations – Cowboy Bebop!

Todays recommendation is an anime show, Cowboy Bebop, originally released in 1998 by tv tokyo, Cowboy Bebop is essentially a space crime drama, I say essentially because quite frankly this show co-exists in so many genre realms that its quite impossible to put a singular moniker on it.

We follow the crew of the spaceship Bebop and at first more specifically the charismatic and dangerously chilled out Spike Spiegal as they chase bounties across the known universe. Sounds straight forward right? Well the self proclaimed cowboy Spike and his motley crew of misfits wouldn’t know a straight forward job if it smacked them in the face! The true beauty of this show is in the bungles and mishaps that happen on every mission.

Now I’ve only mentioned Spike thus far and the show very much begins with a definite highlight on the cowboy but this show is very much about the group of very unique inhabitants that the bebop picks up on its journeys. I wont embellish too much here because I think that the gathering of this crew is a part of the beautiful style of this show but each character that gets added to the show really adds something, there’s absolutely no characters thrown into the mix for fillings sake.

Now lets talk style, there are a lot of musical influences in the show, but a heavy theme is jazz which sets a wonderful oldie classic feel on a futuristic theme, add in plenty of cowboy props, different worlds with different cultures and a heavy heavy amount of normal 90’s apparel and you’ve got a magnificent cultural mess that works! By god does it work!

There’s many easter eggs to be spotted, the creators don’t ever pass up a chance to add in a little nostalgic memento or nod their hats to their inspirations (see if you can spot the flash gordon easter egg in episode 22). The world setting may well be very futuristic, but in this future humans have certainly not learned to evolve passed our many many flaws, the cowboy bebop world is essentially made up of all humanities many issues and this creates a veritable playground for our crew.

If you are heavily into your anime there’s no way you’ve missed this shows existence, however you may be avoiding it because of its older style animations and its 90s creation, let me tell you with conviction, this is a huge mistake! But if you aren’t into anime or haven’t gotten around to trying it yet there’s a very good chance that you just didn’t know this show existed, if this is the case and you’ve read this far, please go just a little further and try the first couple of episodes because this show is not only an all star but the perfect start to a journey into the anime world!

You know around here we love some quotes so heres some from Bebop –

“I’m not going there to die. I’m going to find out if I’m really alive.”

-Spike Spiegel

“Men always seem to think about their past before they die, as though they were frantically searching for proof that they truly lived.”

-Jet Black

“There are three things i hate most: Kids, pets, and women with attitude. So tell me, why do we have all of them packed into our ship!?”

-Spike Spiegel

“When I was a cop, this was my beat. I’m the Black Dog and when I bite I don’t let go. I have no regrets about her, but I’ll settle this score on my own turf.”

-Jet Black

See you Space Cowboy!
